Small businesses are getting it even more…

Those of you who follow my blog know that I love seeing firmographics and demographics and how they change over time.  So much to my joy, I found some stats on how social media is growing among small businesses. 

According to a study called “Local Commerce Monitor-Wave 14” from BIA/Kelsey and ConStat, twice as many small businesses are using twitter now (in Q4’10) than in Q3’09:  19% up from 9% in Q3’09.

  • That said, Twitter (19%) usage is still woefully behind Facebook usage (48%) among small businesses.
  • Interestingly, more than a third of small businesses had increased their use of links and ads on social media sites over the past year, and 46% planned further increases in the next 12 months.
  • And, coming as no surprise…younger businesses are most active in social media—and least active in traditional media.

  1. Awesome to see that small businesses are increasing Twitter use. I’ve found it interesting in reading other articles that universally Twitter has less use than other social media. Several people I know have signed up for Twitter since we started our personal branding class just to keep up with what I’m sharing. Time to promote Twitter to smaller companies!

      I totallly agree. Another problem is that businesses sign up for an account and then just “meform” meaning talking just about their business. All they try to do is sell, not actually provide any value to their stream. Thus, they get ignored. Businesses have to understand that revenue is a by product of social media in most cases…not a direct result!

  2. Thanks for sharing, Sharon. Quite amazing how dramatically social media usage has increased in such a short period of time.
    It’s interesting that a third of small businesses are using links and ads on social media sites while only 19% are using Twitter. This says to me that they are aware of the importance of social media and are trying to create some presence and make themselves known to social media users, but they are still cluing in on the fact that creating regular remarkable content (which Twitter is amazing for) is an important aspect of maintaining that social presence.

    I totally agree…it is amazing, but understandable. Small businesses generally lack the marketing and sales capital necessary to build their business…so emphasizing the “free” marketing channels seems to be a natural fit for them. I think that the big guys in industry are going to see more and more unexpected competition coming from small business in the form of social media!
